How do I change my image?

I've spent years being this frumpy working class single mom who speaks with a southern draw. My clothes are old and all neutral colored - all of my shoes are worn and tattered. I don't know how to wear makeup. I do have waist-length hair that I never cut, but it's the perfect creative canvas for a hair stylist.

I don't have a lot of money and I want to change my image. Where do I start?

Let's start with the clothes. I would suggest getting yourself two pant suits. One black and one beige.

These suits are great because you can wear them to work with a nice shirt or you can put a dressier shirt on for evening wear. (jacket optional for evening) Invest in some nice heels one black pair and one neutral color.

Don't go too drastic with the hair at first. You might want to try cutting off a few inches and adding layers. Put in a few highlights, see how you feel about it. Then take your time and find a hairstyle that you really like.

As for make-up I suggest Almay. They have this really cool collection called "play". Depending on your eye color, they have 3-in-1 eye shadows that play up your eye color and matching mascara. Keep an eye on walgreens, they sometimes have buy one get one free on Almay products.

Make up cause it makes the most differance, and it is the most least expensive to work with, the the hair and be daring something your not likly to do that really revamps you, you can also ask your friend what they think you need to change so that can beat the frumpy vibe, then work on cloths, they have this cool show on tlc called what not to wear check it out, they give good advise for body type and personal style.

You can go to any department store makeup counter and get a free makeover. If you go when they are not very busy they are always helpful with makeup tips etc. You don't have to buy all of the products they show you maybe choose one or two and then get a less expensive versions of the rest at Target etc.

The one place I would spend a little extra is going to a good salon for a haircut. Get recommendations friends coworkers as to a good salon in you area. Meet with whoever is going to do your hair and explain what you like how much time you have to work on your hair etc. Bring pictures of styles you like.

You will be amazed how a new haircut a little makeup will change your appearance. Good Luck!!

First thing to change? The way you see and describe yourself! Confidence is super sexy and inexpensive! Don't do an extreme haircut till you find a personal style you're comfortable with. Buy new shoes and accessorize - practice with colors, styles, till you find something you like, then you can start buying clothes to fit the different you! And have fun!

Make a scrapbook of things you like. Use any paper and paste on pictures from magazines, brochures, newspapers,e.t.c... It can be pics of anything- clothes, flowers, furniture... Then you will see what style and colours you like. Also include words, poems, quotes.. Because our physical apperance is often seen as a reflection of who we are- how can you know what you want to look like if you cannot articulate who you are and what you want to present to the world? Go to a beauty school, the treatments are performed by students and are affordable- same for hairdressing schools. I go op-shopping, garage sales, e-bay- I often smile whan people compliment me/my kids on their clothes because I probably spend a 1/4 of what their worth on them. Buy beauty magazines or get beauty books out of the library to help you learn hair/make-up techniques, and dont be afraid to ask your hairdresser, beautician, make-up service assistant for help as it is their job. Good for you for wanting to feel good and look good! Us women are too often on the bottom of our "to do"list! All the best!
